I have just realised that I omitted to share the results of this survey with Diglis.com readers. Worcester News published a shortened version of this information in July 2015.
The survey was conducted over the winter and completed by a total of 80 people. 83% of survey respondents said they would support plans to open the community centre. Only 14 residents were against the idea of a community centre.
The most popular activities suggested for the centre were 'meeting of local groups' (43% support) and 'keep fit/yoga' (40% support). There was also a lot of interest in activities for children and young people, for all ages. A number of residents are keen to help get local community activities.
We also asked about some other issues in New Diglis and 65% of survey respondents were concerned by the lack of parking. This particularly has an impact on visitors and being able to invite friends and family round. In response to demand, Taylor Wimpey have brought forward additional planned parking spaces at the edge of the development. These are now available for authorised car users. In the survey, New Diglis residents also expressed concern about lack of local shops (49%) and crime and vandalism (36%). If a local convenience store were to open in New Diglis, 67 people said they would shop there.
I think our survey shows that there is real support for local community facilities and a recognition that these may help to address problems with anti-social behaviour etc. With the government cutbacks in local authority funding, there is now no Council money to bring the empty community centre to life. Residents in New Diglis have told us they want the same local youth and community services that older communities in Worcester have.
