On line Community Survey
« on: December 04, 2014, 12:35:55 PM »
Dear Diglis.com readers,

Your local Worcester City Councillors have finally launched our on line survey about local community facilities in new Diglis.  I am sorry that it is has taken rather longer than we intended due to a combination of holidays and technical problems!

You should be able to access our residents' letter and survey via this link
www.worcesterlabour.org.uk/diglis_survey
Please complete to share your views on possible plans to open a new community centre.

We have also printed copies of the survey and are delivering these in new Diglis and speaking to residents where possible.  We are hoping that by the end of the month this will give us a more accurate idea of the levels of support (or opposition) from those living closest to the original designated community centre.

Cllr Lynn Denham
Cllr Jabba Riaz
Adam Scott (City Council Candidate 2015)

I have just realised that I omitted to share the results of this survey with Diglis.com readers.  Worcester News published a shortened version of this information in July 2015.

The survey was conducted over the winter and completed by a total of 80 people. 83% of survey respondents said they would support plans to open the community centre. Only 14 residents were against the idea of a community centre.

The most popular activities suggested for the centre were 'meeting of local groups' (43% support) and 'keep fit/yoga' (40% support).  There was also a lot of interest in activities for children and young people, for all ages.  A number of residents are keen to help get local community activities.

We also asked about some other issues in New Diglis and 65% of survey respondents were concerned by the lack of parking.  This particularly has an impact on visitors and being able to invite friends and family round.  In response to demand, Taylor Wimpey have brought forward additional planned parking spaces at the edge of the development.  These are now available for authorised car users.  In the survey, New Diglis residents also expressed concern about lack of local shops (49%) and crime and vandalism (36%).  If a local convenience store were to open in New Diglis, 67 people said they would shop there.

I think our survey shows that there is real support for local community facilities and a recognition that these may help to address problems with anti-social behaviour etc.  With the government cutbacks in local authority funding, there is now no Council money to bring the empty community centre to life.  Residents in New Diglis have told us they want the same local youth and community services that older communities in Worcester have.

Really pleased to hear that you, Cllr Jabba Riaz and Adam Scott have been beavering away for a community center in the Diglis development. It's good to know that all of you are on the side of the community and that so many responded in a positive way to your survey. All that is left now would be to force the Worcester City Council to provide the means so that the center can be operational the same way as older Community Centers are in Worcester.

Splendid piece of work done by you three. We are lucky to have you batting for us. I have to agree with the parking problems, the lack of a convenience store .

I also agree that crime and vandalism would be reduced if the Community Center was opened to use for the younger population in the Diglis area. I heard that a boxing club was to be set up, is this still on the cards?

Well done to you all and thank you. :D
