Heron

If you stroll through Diglis Basin,you might just catch sight of a splendid heron,fishing from the prow of the boats.  The gulls mob it,     but it carries on regardless.

Not seen a heron there, must have been a remarkable sight. I've frequently seen them by the weir but not in the basin.

We did see what we thought was a buzzard over the playing field on weds am. It too was chased off by other birds pretty swiftly. I've only seen buzzards in the trees by the sewage works before.

Must admit,I was a bit stunned when I saw the heron,but when I told the woman on Cafe Afloat,she said it had been there for a while.

There have been buzzards on the reserve (or rather hovering above) for many years now,but I live opposite,so I would have a better chance of seeing them regularly.There are usually two,but I have seen as many as five.

I spotted a red kite early one morning last year.There have been a couple of sightings over the years,according to the records,but nothing regular.I think the records are available on here,but will check with admin and get back to you.
I suppose this ought to be posted under the nature reserve....oh well...I'll see if I can get away with it

Really glad I found this site and especially this post, because I was having a lovely stroll by the new bridge and weir the other day and could not believe that i was seeing a heron, so very pleased to have it confirmed that there is at least 1 heron in the area, and what an area! Arn't we just the luckiest people to live in what must be one of the most beautiful parts of Worcester.

Hi Keith;if you walk through Diglis Basin lock,you stand a good chance of seeing a kingfisher in that area,particularly in the "pond" area,just before you come out opposite Harry Davis court.They were nesting up the canal leading to the Commandery for many years,as we had one on the prow of our boat every morning,but with all the new building work,they may have left that area.
I've  seen the kingfisher in the "pond" area twice this year.
I agree,we live in a lovely part of the city,and with the coming upgrades in the Diglis area it will be even better.Enjoy your walks

Hi Jaybee, Thank you for that, I recently moved into the area by the 'pond' so I will be keeping a sharp lookout for all of our 'feathered friends' but I have never seen a Kingfisher (apart from on the tv) so I am greatly looking forward to that privilege! On the downside, I collected a plastic carrier bag full of litter last weekend from close to the bottom lock, no doubt it was the lovely summer weather that brought us all out, but it doesn't take a lot of effort, to take rubbish home does it?

Hi KeithM, welcome to this site and more importantly to Diglis.

I agree rubbish is a problem and seems to be an unwelcome feature of urban life but beware your comments could start a torrent of posts bemoaning the state of the nation. I blame Putin myself.
