I was chatting to a chap today who said that due to the popularity of the reserve there are no longer any Skylarks there, is this true?

There havn't been skylarks on the reserve for many years now. There were always skylarks when the area was simply fields and there were only cows for the skylarks to contend with.

Most never came back after the area was used as a council tip for thirteen years, but a few did when the land was left to settle. Then when St Peters estate was built, the clay soil dug out was dumped on top of the old tip to top it off. This completely destroyed their habitat, and although the Rangers tried to recreate a small habitat for them by creating paths of design, despite watching and hoping they would come back,I've never seen any over there in the ten years since the reserve has been managed,or for 20 years before that.

If anyone has spotted skylarks over there, the Rangers would be very pleased to hear of a sighting, and so would I :)
